Roy Dupuis is a Canadian actor, director, and producer, best known for his role of Michael Samuelle, a counterterrorism operative in the TV series La Femme Nikita from 1997 to 2001, as well as the roles in The Rocket (2005), Shake Hands with the Devil (2007), and Mesrine Part 1: Killer Instinct (2008). He also played a character of Ovila Pronovost in Les Filles de Caleb (1990) and Blanche (1993) TV series, and Michel Gagné in Scoop (1992) TV series, as well as the next 3 seasons – Scoop II (1993), Scoop III (1994), and Scoop IV (1995).

Roy was recognized for the roles of Dominique Samson in Heads or Tails (1997), and John Strauss in Bleeders (1997) before finally landing the role in La Femme Nikita in 1997 that helped his acting career tremendously. After that, Roy had prominent roles in movies such as That Beautiful Somewhere (2006), Emotional Arithmetic (2007), Truffe (2007), Mesrine Part 2: Public Enemy #1 (2008), The Timekeeper (2009), and Les rescapés TV series from 2010 to 2012, as well as movies Another House (2013), The Sound of Trees (2015), and Barefoot at Dawn (2017).

  1. Both of his parents were born in Canada, but are of French descent.
  2. Quickly after his birth, the whole family moved to Amos, Quebec, Canada, and stayed there until Roy was 11 years old.
  3. When he was 13, his family moved to Kapuskasing, Ontario, due to his father’s profession of selling meat for the Canada Packers company. It was there that he learned to speak and write English.
  4. When he was 14, his parents got divorced, and he moved with his mother, younger brother, and an older sister to Sainte-Rose, Laval, Quebec.
  5. His mother was a piano teacher, but Roy learned to play the cello at a very young age and had the chance to play it in a few of his television and film roles.
  6. Roy’s first choice at profession was not acting at all. In fact, he studied physics in high school, but after he saw the film Molière (1978), directed and written by Ariane Mnouchkine, it ignited a spark in him.
  7. Roy accidentally went into acting, after a female friend of his that studied at the National Theatre School of Canada, asked him to help her with her lines for a play. A few days after doing so, another friend of the girl, named Stefen Labelle, backed out of the audition for the play in the last minute but had the same date and time as the girl, after which he stepped in at the insistence of his female friend.
  8. Roy essentially presented himself as Stefen, and impressed the director of the play, but was quickly found out because the real Stefen’s picture revealed he was an Afro-haired, African-American guy, which made impersonation easily discoverable, and highly illegal. However, the director told Roy to go and register if he really wanted to attend the school, and never tell anyone how he started if he got accepted, which he did.
  9. He went from almost complete anonymity to being a superstar when he starred in the drama movie Les Filles de Caleb in 1990, which was seen by 80% of the population of Quebec.
  10. Roy was chosen to play the role of Maurice “Rocket” Richard because of a strong physical resemblance to him. He starred in a biography TV portrayal titled The Rocket in 1999, before starring in a well-known hockey movie The Rocket in 2005.
  11. Roy won the Jutra Award in 2005 for Mémoires effective (2004) in the category of “Best Actor”, as well as Genie Award in 2005 for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role” for the same film.
  12. He won a Jutra Award in 2008 for “Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role” for his role in Shake Hands with the Devil (2007), as well as a Canadian Award at the Atlantic Film Festival in 2007 for “Best Actor”.
  13. His love for the mountains, forests, and lakes, came from the region Abitibi, a desolate, natural area around 500 miles from Montreal that he lived in as a child. After a successful career, Roy moved to the countryside near Quebec and started restoring a 1840s farmhouse out of passion and interest for antique refurbishing.
  14. In 2005, he began restoring second-hand sailing boats and making them shine in their former glory. He also took lessons in water navigation and started going on various adventures.
