Lou Diamond Phillips is an American actor and director. He is best known for portraying the role of American singer-songwriter Ritchie Valens in the biographical drama film La Bamba (1987) and his portrayal of King Mongkut of Siam in the Broadway debut with the 1996 revival of The King and I for which he also got a Tony Award nomination. Some of his well-known films are Young Guns (1988), Young Guns II (1990), Courage Under Fire (1996), The Big Hit (1998), Brokedown Palace (1999), Che (2008), and The 33 (2015).

- As his father was a marine, Lou was named after a US Marine Leland Lou Diamond and later after his father’s death, he took up the surname of his step-father.
- The first film he did was called Trespasses and was a low budget film.
- He got his first big break in the American biographical film La Bamba in 1987 where he played the role of singer-songwriter Ritchie Valens.
- After working in the films, he got a chance to star in the Miami Vice‘s episode titled Red Tape in March 1987, where he portrayed detective Bobby Diaz and also acted in a movie titled American Me.
- In 1988, he acted alongside Edward James Olmos in the inner-city high school drama Stand and Deliver. In the film, he played the character of Angel David Guzman, a cholo gangster who is inspired by his math teacher, Jaime Escalante, to excel at calculus and for mastering the subject, he develops a friendship with his teacher. Lou was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for “Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture” and went on to win the Independent Spirit Award for “Best Supporting Male” for the same.
