Sarah Hyland’s Health Struggle
Actress Sarah Hyland is doing great after a course of medical problems left her in and out of hospitals past few years.
In an interview with Self magazine, the “Modern Family” actress Hyland revealed about receiving a second kidney transplant and her endometriosis, a condition that occurs when tissue lining the uterus is found outside of the uterus.
Hyland had her first transplant seven years ago in 2012 due to Kidney Dysplasia. Her father was the donor.
Hyland said, her body began rejecting the kidney two years ago, which had to be removed in May 2017. During that surgery, doctors also diagnosed that she had an abdominal hernia.
Hyland said,
“When a family member gives you a second chance at life and it fails, it feels like your fault and it’s not.”
The suffering left Hyland very depressed and she even pondered suicide, she told the magazine.
“I had gone through 26 years of always being a burden, of always having to be looked after, having to be cared for because I’ve always had health issues. And it’s a really helpless feeling,” she said.
“Things like this can be really hard on a person.”
Hyland goes through dialysis from February to October 2017. During that dialysis, it was found her younger brother Ian Hyland who is also an actor was a match. In September 2017, she had her second transplant.
She also had surgery to treat her endometriosis and another to repair her hernia in the spring of 2018. After six surgeries in a year and a half, Hyland finally says she’s now stable and super happy with life.
What is Kidney Dysplasia
Kidney dysplasia is called a condition which occurs when the internal structures of one or both of a fetus’ kidneys do not develop normally while in the womb.
During normal development of a fetus, two thin tubes of muscle called ureters develop into the kidneys and add to form a chain of tiny structures called tubules which urine as the fetus grows in the womb.
In kidney dysplasia, the tubules fail to branch out completely. Urine which would flow normally through the tubules has nowhere to go. Then urine collects inside the affected kidney and forms fluid-filled sacs called cysts. The cysts replace normal kidney tissue and inhibit the kidney from functioning.
What is Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a usually painful disorder in which tissue that normally lines the inside of uterus “the endometrium “develops outside the uterus. Endometriosis mostly involves ovaries, fallopian tubes and the tissue lining of the pelvis.
Symptoms
The most common symptoms of Endometriosis are:
- Painful periods (dysmenorrhea)
- Pain with intercourse
- Pain with bowel movements or urination(especially during the menstrual period)
- Excessive bleeding
- Infertility
- Fatigue
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Bloating or nausea, especially during menstrual periods
What is Abdominal Hernia
An abdominal hernia is a condition which occurs when an organ or other pieces of tissue sticking out through one of the weak muscle walls that hem in the abdominal cavity. If the hernia occurs in the abdominal wall or groins the sac which protrudes through the weak area may contain a piece of intestine or fatty lining of the colon.
Risks Factor of Abdominal Hernia
- Chronic constipation
- Chronic cough
- Recurrent vomiting
- Obesity
- Ascites (an abnormal collection of fluid in the abdominal cavity)
- Peritoneal dialysis
- Abdominal masses
- Pregnancy
- Abdominal surgeries (a risk for incisional hernias)
- Repeatedly moving or lifting heavy objects
