Yohji Yamamoto Facts
- He never found out what happened to his father. He was drafted into the Imperial service to fight against the Allies in World War II.
- Officially, his father “died in the line of duty during fierce fighting in the mountainous region east of Baguio, Philippines.” His mom held a funeral, despite never having any remains to bury.
- Yohji credits the traumatic experience of growing up as the only son of a war widow for allowing him to see society through women’s eyes, thus allowing him to become a successful designer.
- His mom was initially angry when Yohji told her he wanted to hang his law degree and help her with dressmaking. She finally agreed but under the condition that he earn a degree from a dressmaking school, which he did in 1969.
- He can play the guitar.
- The inspiration for his 1st collection, Y, came from a desire to make men’s clothes for women. It all started with the idea of creating a woman’s coat that would “protect the woman’s body from something – maybe from men’s eyes or a cold wind.”
- Most of his collections are made in black. He described the color as “lazy and easy, but mysterious.” According to him, black also says “I don’t bother you – don’t bother me.” His love for black clothing stems from watching his mother wear black mourning clothes.
- In 2007, the sales of his lines, Y and Yohji Yamamoto, were making more than $100 million annually.
- His brand went $65 million in debt in 2009. Integral Corp, a private equity firm, was called to handle the restructuring but he was forced to give up ownership. By November 2010, his brand was out of debt completely and he “felt relieved of a heavy burden.”
- Yohji stated that he cannot imagine himself retired as he has such a deep love for fashion design.
- He has released a line of fragrances, simply named Yohji Yamamoto Parfums.
- He never liked the concept of accessories and “couldn’t understand how people bore to have things around their wrists and necks.”
- The footwear he designs is predominantly flat and always focuses on function over form.
