- He began his training in taekwondo and boxing at the age of 5. Pettis also began training in wrestling in college.
- At the age of 18, he started training mixed martial arts at Roufusport. During that time, he was already a 3rd-degree black belt holder in taekwondo.
- On November 12, 2003, a robbery took place at a friend’s house which caused his father’s death.
- In December 2007, he made his professional MMA debut and acquired an 8-0 record in all fights held by Adam Sandoval and Duke Roufus.
- He had an impressive record before debuting with the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) which include a victory in the Gladiator Fighting Series Lightweight Championships.

Pettis was then fined 20% of his purse which ultimately went to Holloway. He became the first fighter to miss weight for a UFC championship since Travis Lutter in February 2007.
- Pettis faced Carlos Diego Ferreira in a lightweight bout at UFC 246 on January 18, 2020. He was defeated by Ferreira via rear-naked choke in the 2nd round.
