Roston Chase Facts
- His parents were always supportive of his career as a professional cricketer.
- Roston considers his brother to be his mentor.
- He attended the same school as and .
- Growing up, the best Test match he had ever witnessed was West Indies versus Australia in March 1999. It was due to Brian Lara, who scored 153 not out in the 4th innings of the match, and secured West Indies’ win by 1 wicket. This was considered the best innings ever played in Test cricket.
- As a batting all-rounder, he is a right-arm off-spin bowler and a right-handed batsman.
- He wasn’t very confident in his bowling when he started out. Mushtaq “Mushy” Ahmed, a former legspinner for Pakistan, who later became a consultant for West Indies, helped him practice.
- He scored his maiden first-class century during the domestic 2014-2015 season against the Windward Islands with 120 not out from 241 balls.
- Roston has a ritual that started when he scored his first Test hundred against India in 2016, which ultimately saved the game. He crossed his arms to form the letter “X” which was a symbol for the Christ Church Parish, his hometown.
- West Indies Players’ Association named him “Cricketer of the Year” and “Test Cricketer of the Year” in July 2017.
- Roston was named “Best Regional Limited-Overs Cricketer of the Year” at the Cricket West Indies’ Awards held in June 2018.
- Roston was praised for his ability to bat for draws.
- He considers Jason Holder, the captain of West Indies, a legend in his eyes, and a long-time friend. Jason, in return, stated that he can come across as “lackadaisical and lazy and smooth” but he is a wonderful individual and hard worker.
- In October 2018, Chase and Jason achieved 3 100-plus partnerships for the 7th wicket. This was the most achieved by any pair in Test history and they averaged 75.83 in those 7 innings.
- In February 2019, Roston took 8 wickets in the 2nd innings of the 1st Test against England but did not take another in the series. This was deemed a unique feat. The previous record, 7 wickets in a Test inning, and then no other wickets in the series was achieved by 5 other cricketers.
- People describe Roston as a deep thinker. He is a player who talks little and spends his time analyzing the game plan.
- His Barbadian teammates have a running joke that if he was a superhero, his name would be Crisis Man. Roston admitted to relishing the situations where his team is under high pressure and he has to “dig it out of the hole.”
- Roston sees himself as someone who could be the number 1 all-rounder in the world in the future.
- David Lloyd, a former English cricketer, once told Roston that if he weren’t a cricketer, he would have been “worth £50 million as a soccer player” due to how good he is.
