Pastor Maldonado is a Venezuelan professional racing driver who participated competitively in the Formula One World Championship from 2011 to 2015 and won the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix. He then spent another couple of seasons at F1 as a test driver before moving on to competitions such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, the FIA World Endurance Championship, and the WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, all in the LMP2 class. He had finished in 3rd place in the 2018-19 season of the FIA World Endurance Championship. Before starting his F1 journey in 2011, he had participated in numerous intermediate tiers, winning the Formula Renault 2.0 Italy Winter Cup in 2003, the Formula Renault 2.0 Italy series in 2004, and the GP2 Series in 2010. 1. During his triumphant campaign at the 2010 GP2 Series, Pastor had won 6 of the 20 races in the season. However, he never won managed to win 2 races in a row. His wins came in a continuous sequence of alternate races – 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, and 15th. By that time, he had built up such a lead over his nearest competitors that it ceased to matter that he was forced to retire in the next 3 races and had finished in the 17th position in the 19th race.
2. In his 5 years of competitive racing in Formula One (2011-2015), he had been reprimanded with the most number of penalty points in 2 seasons – 2012 and 2014.
3. When he won the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix, he became the first Venezuelan driver ever to win a Formula One race. By the time he had stopped racing competitively in F1 in 2015, it remained not just his only F1 win but also his only podium finish and his only pole position. As of June 2020, no other driver had won a race for the Williams F1 Team after that.
4. Pastor has been outspoken in his native Venezuela about his political beliefs and affiliations. He has often identified himself as a socialist and was a close friend of the late Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez. He was even chosen as one of the guards of honor at Hugo Chávez’s funeral in 2013.
