Marin Honda Facts

  1. She began to learn figure skating in 2003, at the age of just 2, getting inspired by her older brother Taichi who is also a competitive figure skater.
  2. Marin began participating competitively from the 2011-12 season and earned a podium finish at the Japanese Novice Championships for 4 successive events – 2nd (2011-12),  1st (2012-13), 3rd (2013-14), and 2nd (2014-15).
  3. She suffers from hallux valgus which is a deformity of the joint that connects the big toe to the foot. This has often prevented her from executing the Lutz and flip to perfection.
  4. At the 2016 ISU Junior Grand Prix (JGP) Japan (Yokohama), her debut appearance at the event, she had secured 1st place in the free skate program and finished 2nd overall. Her score of 128.64 points in the free program was the then world record for junior-level ladies. It, however, did not last even as long as a month. Set on September 11, 2016, it was broken on October 8, 2016, by Anastasiia Gubanova at the 2016 JGP Germany.
  5. In 2019, she was involved in a car crash with fellow Japanese skater Keiji Tanaka but escaped with injuries to her right shin and forehead. The duo was commuting back from the venue of the 2019 Skate Canada International after a practice session when the incident occurred. Marin was not even due to participate at the event and was only added to the roster after the withdrawal of Mai Mihara. Despite being hampered by the support brace that she was wearing due to the injuries, she decided to compete and finished a creditable 6th overall.
