The musical journey of Tate started in a local band called Tyrant and by that time he went by the name of Jeff Waterfall. The band split after a short time, and he moved to a band named Babylon, which also broke, and he joined The Mob. He left The Mob to become a keyboardist and the lead vocalist in another band called Myth.

He wrote his very first song called “The Lady Wore Black” for The Mob, which he had rejoined after leaving Myth. The band later changed their name and called themselves Queensryche in 1982 and Tate became their official lead singer. A year into changing their name, the band was signed by EMI into a 15 years contract, encompassing seven albums. The band’s most success came while they were under this label in their 1988 album Operation: Mindcrime and Empire in the 1990s.

From 2005 to 2012, Tate’s wife Susan was the manager of the band while his daughter Miranda was running the fan club. Susan and Miranda were fired by the other band members on 12 April 2012 and this brought about a big disagreement between the band members and Tate. The disagreement saw Tate physically assaulting two members of the band, leading to him being expelled from the band.

This led to a lawsuit by Tate and his wife, but they lost, leaving the ownership of the band to the other members. Tate formed a solo group under the same name Queensryche, and he recorded his first album called Frequency Unknown. His band went on an anniversary tour for the Operation: Mindcrime album in April 2013 and it ended in September 2014. In 2015, he renamed his band Operation: Mindcrime and since then they have released The Key, The New Reality, and Resurrection among others.
