The band was a hit in the early 1970s around North Florida and Gainesville but quickly broke up when they relocated to Los Angeles in 1974. They had signed a record deal with Shelter Records, but unfortunately, they released a single that performed poorly and soon after disbanded.

Campbell rejoined petty in 1976 to start a new band Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, together with former Mudcrutch band members Ron Blair, Benmont Tench, and Stan Lynch. Mike prefers to have his work serve each song’s need and has been acclaimed to be one of those guitarists who have never wasted a note, as stated by the Guitar World Magazine. He was highly involved in constructing and arranging the band’s melodic tunes together with Tench. He also believes in the rawness of music to polish in the studio.

Campbell was a co-producer to the Heartbreakers albums: Into the Great Wide Open, pack Up the Plantation: Live!, Southern Accents, songs, and Music from “She’s the One,” and as well as Tom petty’s solo albums highway Companion and Full moon fever.

One week later, after the performance with the Heartbreakers at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Tom Petty died on October 2, 2017. The performance was also Campbell’s last live performance with the heartbreakers and after he had toured with tom petty for almost 50 years.

While still in the Heartbreakers band, Campbell played in a sideband, the Dirty knobs, with Matt Laug (drummer), Lance Morrison (bassist), and Jason Sinay (guitarist). The band released “Wreckless Abandon,” which is the title track for the band’s forthcoming album.
