Professional Career
After graduation, Vince Papale began to play for the semi-professional Aston Green Knights team of the Seaboard Football League. In addition, from 1968 to 1974 he served in the Interboro High School as a teacher in middle school business and coached a football team in the junior students. Papale quit teaching in the spring of 1974 to pursue the Bell of Philadelphia.
It was welcomed into the main roster and would continue playing for the team the next two seasons. He caught nine passes for 121 yards on nine catches, averaging 13.4 yards per catch, during that season. In 1975, he only caught one pass, but it was for 49 yards and a touchdown. In both of his seasons with the Bell, he was called a “special teams” standout.
Papale worked in a bar after his time with Bell came to an end. In the bar leagues, he even played “rough touch” football. During this time, Jim Murray, the general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles, welcomed him to a private workout led by Dick Vermeil. At the age of 30, Papale made his NFL debut for the Eagles, making him the NFL’s oldest rookie without any college experience.
He played 14 games as a wide receiver and 13 games on special teams in 1976 and 1977, and 13 games in 1978. He had two fumble recoveries and one 15-yard catch during his tenure with the team. He abruptly ended his career in 1978 because of shoulder damage. He then spent eight years as a radio and television presenter before deciding to pursue a career as a commercial mortgage banker.
