He’d always loved to play the drums, but his parents convinced him to get a guitar instead because “drums can’t be turned off.” Daron started playing the guitar when he was 11 years old, saying in an interview, “For the first year and a half, I learned how to play by ear and did alright.”

Only after a few years, I earned a reputation as a high school guitar player. And by the time I was 16 or 17, I’d learned it was a strong song-writing tool, and that’s how I felt about it. I don’t keep myself up as Mr. Guitar Virtuoso.”

Professional Career

Malakian grew up listening to Slayer, Venom, Metallica, Pantera, and Sepultura, among other thrash metal artists. Malakian first started listening to The Beatles, naming John Lennon as one of his greatest songwriter influences. Other British Invasion bands like The Kinks and The Who, as well as folk-rockers like Peter, Paul and Mary and punk leader Iggy Pop, were significant influences.

Malakian met Serj Tankian in 1993, when they were both in separate bands and sharing the same rehearsal studio. Tankian was in a band playing keyboards, and Daron was in another band playing guitar and singing. With bassist Dave Hakopyan and drummer Domingo Laraino, they founded Soil, a jam band.

Shavo Odadjian went on to serve as their producer and rhythm guitarist. After Soil disbanded, Malakian, Tankian, and Odadjian (who switched to bass) founded a new band called “System of a Down,” named after a poem written by Daron. They then hired Andy Khachaturian as their drummer, who was replaced by John Dolmayan in 1997.

Malakian worked with Rick Rubin on System of a Down’s songs, as well as albums by The Ambulance and Bad Acid Trip (a band signed to Serjical Strike Records by fellow member Serj Tankian). Amen was the first band signed to Malakian’s EatUrMusic label, which he formed in 2003. The label is currently inactive, and its future is uncertain.

Daron Malakian (lead guitar and vocals), Greg Kelso (rhythm guitar), Casey Chaos (vocals), and Zach Hill (drums) released Ghetto Blaster Rehearsals, a demo tape credited to the name Scars on Broadway, in 2003. However, in 2007, the band’s website posted an official letter stating that these songs are unrelated to Malakian’s work.

Following System’s hiatus, Malakian revealed Scars on Broadway, an album that would feature Shavo Odadjian, the bassist from System of a Down, and himself. In 2008, the band released an eponymous album, which included the hit single “They Say” (written by Malakian).

Malakian, however, abruptly cancelled all planned concert and TV appearances shortly before the album’s release, citing a lack of energy and the fact that his “heart wasn’t into touring.” Following the cancellation of his tour in favour of Scars on Broadway’s debut album in October 2008, Malakian remained out of the spotlight. Scars on Broadway released their first new studio album in precisely two years on July 29, 2010.
