Bradshaw was born in the Louisiana city of Shreveport. William Marvin “Bill” Bradshaw (1927–2014), a native of Sparta, Tennessee, was a former vice president of production for the Riley Beaird Company in Shreveport and a Southern Baptist layman.

Bradshaw was the first overall pick in the 1970 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. Thanks to the teams’ close 1–13 records in 1969, the Steelers won a coin flip tiebreaker with the Chicago Bears for the first pick in the draft. Bradshaw was regarded as the consensus No. 1 selection at the time.
