Professional Career

Mossimo Giannulli founded Mossimo in 1986 on Balboa Island in Newport Beach, California. The firm made $1 million in its first year and $4 million the next year. Giannulli widened the collection in 1991 by adding knits, sweaters, and sweatshirts. Four years later, the line grew even further as it began offering custom suits for men and women. Mossimo Inc., founded by Giannulli, grew to be a multimillion-dollar lifestyle, clothes, and accessory business in just eight years. Its securities were soon traded on the New York Stock Exchange.

However, in 1997, Mossimo’s earnings began to fall, and the company lacked the infrastructure to compete. Owing to a lack of technology, Giannulli believed the firm was not working to its full potential. So, in order to reap the rewards of new technologies, he agreed to combine the corporation with Target Stores, one of the industry’s behemoths. Mossimo announced a multi-product license deal with Target Stores for $27.8 million on March 28, 2000. Giannulli sold his business to Iconix Brand Group six years back.

The company is now available in about 1,700 outlets throughout the United States, with 600 overseas branches in the United Kingdom, Australia, South America, the Philippines, India, and Japan.

On March 12, 2019, Giannulli and his wife Lori Loughlin were arrested in connection with their suspected role in a national college entrance exam cheating case involving their two daughters’ admission to the University of Southern California (including Olivia Jade) (USC). They’ve been charged with postal theft scheme and honest services fraud. They were each released after posting $1 million bail. They were among a group of 50 people who had been convicted. In April 2019, the couple was both charged with money laundering.

According to the complaint, the pair paid $500,000 to the Key Worldwide Foundation under the pretext of a gift so that USC’s admissions committee would believe that their two daughters would be joining the school’s women’s rowing team if admitted. In reality, neither young women had ever participated in the sport and had no intention of doing so in the future. Giannulli and his wife initially denied the allegations, but later pleaded guilty as part of a plea deal.

On August 21, 2020, Giannulli was sentenced to five months in prison and a $250,000 fine, while his wife received two months in prison and a $150,000 fine. Both Giannulli and Loughlin had until the 19th of November to return to prison. Giannuli declined to return to prison until Loughlin did on October 30, 2020. Owing to the current COVID-19 pandemic, Loughlin’s ability to allow visitors, including Giannulli, meet her in prison was revoked the same day.
