Davis worked as an acting assistant professor in the philosophy department at the University of California, Los Angeles, (UCLA), from 1969. She was recognized at the time as a radical feminist and activist, a member of the Communist Party USA, and an affiliate of the Black Panther Party’s Los Angeles branch.

Davis was accused with “aggravated kidnapping and first-degree murder in the killing of Judge Harold Haley,” and a warrant for her arrest was issued by Marin County Superior Court Judge Peter Allen Smith. On August 14, 1970, hours after the court issued the warrant, a major search for and arrest of Davis started. J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI director, put Davis on the FBI’s Ten Most Wanted Fugitive List on August 18, four days after the warrant was issued; she was the third woman and the 309th person to be listed.

Davis embarked on a worldwide speaking tour in 1972 after her acquittal, which included a stop in Cuba, where she had previously been visited by Fidel Castro as a part of a Communist Party delegation in 1969. According to the CIA, 5% of Soviet propaganda efforts were focused on the Angela Davis campaign in 1971.

Davis got an honorary doctorate from Moscow State University in August 1972 after visiting the USSR at the request of the Central Committee. Davis was supported by the East German government, which launched a large-scale campaign on his behalf. Davis visited East Germany in September 1972, when she met the country’s leader, Erich Honecker, and received an honorary degree from the University of Leipzig.
