Alan Sugar Facts
- When he was young, his family used to live in a council flat. Due to his profuse and curly hair, he was nicknamed “Mop head”, which happens to be the same nickname that he still uses.
- While studying, Sugar worked at greengrocers to earn extra money. He left school at the age of 16 and worked briefly for the civil service as a statistician at the Ministry of Education. Sugar also sold radio aerials for cars and other electrical goods out of a van which he bought only for £50 and insured for £8. The money he had used in buying electrical goods came from his postal savings amounted to £100 which he decided to withdraw all.
- From 1991 to 2001, he was the chairman and part-owner of Tottenham Hotspur but he sold his remaining stake in the club for £25m.
- He appears in the BBC TV series The Apprentice, which was first broadcasted in 2005.
- According to the Sunday Times “Rich List”, he became a billionaire in 2015. In 2016, Sugar’s fortune was estimated at £1.15bn, ranking him as the 95th richest-person in the UK.
- In February 2009, reports had claimed that Sugar initiated legal proceedings against The Sun newspaper which came after a report made rounds claiming that he was named on a hit list of British Jews in response to Israel’s ongoing military operation in Gaza. The alleged threats were reportedly made by Glen Jenvey, who was the original source of The Sun‘s report, which had been posted to a Muslim website under a false identity.
- In 2015, he had an estimated wealth of £1.04 billion equivalent to $1.58 billion.
- On June 5, 2009, the BBC reported that he would become Lord Sugar and was offered a job as the government’s “Enterprise Champion”. Shortly after reports made the rounds, he went on to clarify that he would not be joining the government, adding that the appointment was politically neutral and that all he wanted was to help businesses and entrepreneurs.
- Besides Amstrad, Sugar founded multiple ventures namely, Amsair, Amsprop, Viglen Ltd, and Amscreen.
