Honnold spent more than a decade living in a van. He says, “I don’t think ‘van life’ is especially appealing.” “It’s not that I like living in a car, but I do enjoy living in all of these locations.” I enjoy being in Yosemite; I enjoy being pretty much somewhere where the weather is nice; I enjoy being able to monitor good conditions all around. And I want to feel pretty relaxed when I’m doing it. As a result, staying in a car is pretty much a must… I’d like to live in a good, cozy house if I could miraculously teleport a house from one location to another.

Honnold shot to fame in 2007 when he free soloed Yosemite’s Astroman and the Rostrum in a single day, matching Peter Croft’s iconic 1987 feat. A year back, he free soloed Zion’s Moonlight Buttress’s 1,200-foot 5.12d finger crack.

On April 1, the ascent was confirmed. People thought the news was a hoax for days. Five months later, Honnold made history by free soloing Half Dome’s 2,000-foot Regular Northwest Face, which had been glacially bulldozed. This climb was dubbed “the most spectacular ropeless ascent ever” by Croft.

Since his solo of Half Dome’s Regular Northwest Face in 2012 was included in the film Alone on the Wall and a subsequent 60 Minutes interview, he achieved media exposure. Honnold and Hans Florine missed setting the record time on Yosemite’s El Capitan’s Nose path by 45 seconds in November 2011.

Dean Potter & Sean Leary had set the previous record of 2:36:45 in November 2010. Honnold and Florine set a new record of 2:23:46 (or 2:23:51) on the same route on June 17, 2012. Clif Bar, along with Dean Potter, Steph Davis, Timmy O’Neill, and Cedar Wright, revealed in November 2014 that they would no longer fund Honnold.
