Amy Purdy Facts
- When Amy was 19 years old, her world was turned upside down after she had been diagnosed with Neisseria Meningitidis, a form of bacterial meningitis. The infection had damaged her circulatory system to such an extent that both of her legs had to be amputated below the knee.
- Later, she lost both her kidneys and the doctors had given her a minimal chance of survival. 2 years after this, her father had donated his kidney to her and after a successful transplant, she was also fitted with prosthetic legs, and within a year of the operation, she had started pursuing a career in para-snowboarding. She earned a grant from a non-profit organization called Challenged Athletes Foundation (CAF) through which she competed in numerous snowboarding competitions in the United States.
- In 2005, she had co-founded a non-profit organization called Adaptive Action Sports to help individuals with physical disabilities who wish to get involved in action sports, art, and music.
- In 2014, she had become the first double amputee contestant to participate in the globally popular competition-based reality TV series Dancing with the Stars. She never received a score lower than an 8 from any of the judges and had ended the season as runner-up.
- In September 2015, she was invited to serve as a celebrity judge at the Miss America 2016 pageant.
