Andrew Scott is an accomplished Irish actor who garnered much recognition for his character Jim Moriarty in the widely popular BBC crime drama series Sherlock. His portrayal of one of Shakespeare’s iconic characters, Hamlet, in the play of the same name directed by Robert Icke has also brought him great critical acclaim. He has won many awards for his contribution as an actor.

Andrew studied at a private boys’ Jesuit Catholic school called Gonzaga College in South Dublin and attended drama classes for children every Saturday. His acting classes proved to be fruitful and he got cast in two commercials for a local television network as well as landed a lead role in an Irish film at the age of 17.

He earned a bursary/scholarship to study fine arts but decided to enroll in the drama program of Trinity College in Dublin instead. After 6 months of college, Andrew dropped out and joined Abbey Theatre, also known as National Theatre of Ireland, to learn acting on this full-time job.

Few years down the line following his performance in 6 plays in Dublin, Andrew relocated to live in London at the age of 22.

  1. Had he not been an actor, Andrew would have chosen to become a painter.
  2. He earned £78 for one of his earliest acting jobs, the Flahavan Porridge commercial with which he bought himself a bunk bed.
