Koch is the son of Mary Clementine (née Robinson) and Fred C. Koch, the founder of the Koch Industries oil-refining conglomerate. Harry Koch, his paternal grandfather, was a Dutch immigrant who founded the Quanah Tribune-Chief newspaper and was a shareholder in Quanah, Acme, and Pacific Railway. William Ingraham Kip, an Episcopal priest, William Burnet Kinney, a politician, and Elizabeth Clementine Stedman, a journalist, were among his maternal great-grandparents.

Koch was employed by his family’s company. Koch Industries shares had been passed on to him and his elder brother Frederick R. Koch. In 1983, they sold the shares to their brothers, Charles and David, for $800 million. The legal battles between Charles and David lasted almost two decades.

In order to take over the firm, Bill and his eldest brother, Frederick, sided with J. Howard Marshall III, J. Howard Marshall II’s eldest son, against Charles and David at one stage. Koch signed a settlement with the company in 2001, accusing it of stealing oil from federal and Indian lands.

Koch and the Yacht America 3 won the America’s Cup in 1992, beating the Italian Challenger Il Moro di Venezia. America 3 had a 28–10 overall record, including courts. Koch is said to have spent about $65 million on the project and, despite being an amateur, sailed on the crew with the help of veteran sailors like Buddy Melges. Koch sponsored a new team to play for the cup in 1995. On a yacht called Mighty Mary, the crew was largely made up of women, with the exception of tactician David Dellenbaugh. The sailing, however, was defeated in the trials by Dennis Conner’s Stars & Stripes.

Koch is an art and wine enthusiast. He also brought several high-profile lawsuits against counterfeit wine retailers, including one against Hardy Rodenstock for selling wine purportedly owned by Thomas Jefferson. Koch also sued Rudy Kurniawan and Acker, Merrall & Condit, the auction house from which he bought Kurniawan’s wine.
