Venus bought a book at an auction while she was a college student that included an envelope with the address of famous writer Henry Miller. Venus and Miller became “pen friends” after writing to one other. Miller eventually became her mentor, and Brenda became his muse. Miller sent 1,500 letters to Brenda Venus, which were gathered in the 1986 book Dear, Dear Brenda – Henry Miller’s Love Letters to Brenda Venus. Miller wrote about Venus in his novel, Joey: “It takes a particular kind of love to love towards the end of one’s life. That kind of love can only be inspired by a select few ladies. What joy it is to wake up with the words “I love you” on one’s lips! I’m in ecstasy just saying “Brenda.”

In the introduction to Miller’s book Dear, Dear Brenda, fellow novelist and poet Lawrence Durrell wrote: “The role of Brenda Venus will keep its interest and importance also as a memorial of his last great attachment—an Ariel to his Prospero… She enabled him to dominate his infirmities and to experience all the Joys of Paradise.”

Ed Millis, a journalist, claims that “For the sick and elderly Miller, Venus was a source of inspiration. Brenda was just 24 years old, whereas Henry was 84 years old. He dubbed her “The Boticelli of Mississippi” because she was a stunning Southern belle. Millions of us had been transported to the enticing Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn by Henry, the renegade thinker and writer.

He was now ill and recovering slowly. He was in need of a pick-me-up… Brenda the Muse gave her mortal charge new life and a cause to live. Venus received concentration and fine tuning from Miller, who wrote her over 1,500 letters totalling over 4,000 handwritten pages. For almost four years—the last four years of his life—she replied in kind.”

Vladimir Putin, Russia’s prime leader, invited her to visit Moscow on her birthday, November 10. The invitation was to see the world premiere of Venus, a play based on her life. Olympic gold medalist Svetlana Khorkina, who portrayed the main role, was cast with members of the Bolshoi Ballet.

“Brenda Venus was one of the ladies with whom Miller had a passionate yet platonic connection. Miller and her were companions for four years, until he died in 1980. Dear, Dear Brenda, a collection of Miller’s hundreds of letters to Venus, was released in 1986. Venus appeared for the July 1986 edition of Playboy after the book’s publication.”
