  1. As a junior, he once failed to make it to the varsity team and was placed as a reserve. However, after he grew to 6 ft 4 in long, he earned his position as a starting on the varsity during his senior year. He was one of the most competitive players at the time, averaging 19.1 points and 17.9 rebounds per game and leading his team to a 26-3 record en route to the state semifinals.
  2. He played at Auburn University for 3 seasons. Despite his personal struggle to control his weight which is not ideally good for basketball players, he managed to excel as a player and led the SEC in rebounding every year. Barkley became an instant crowd favorite with his dunks and blocked shots that seemed to make up to his lack of height and overweight stature.
  3. During his college career, he played the center position despite his short height in comparison to other players.
  4. He was a member of Auburn’s All-Century team and holds the record for career field goal percentage with 62.6%.
  5. He has been award plenty of awards including the Southeastern Conference (SEC) “Player of the Year” in 1984, 3 All-SEC selections, and 1 Second Team All-American selection. Barkley was also named the SEC “Player of the Decade” for the 1980s by the Birmingham Post-Herald.
  6. In his entire college career, Barkley averaged 14. points on 68.2% field goal shooting, 9.6 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.7 blocks per game.
  7. After leaving Auburn, he then became eligible for the 1984 NBA draft during which he was also selected as the 5th pick in the first round by the Philadelphia 76ers.
  8. He was invited by Bob Knight to do a tryout for the United States men’s basketball team in preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics. Though he made it to the final cuts, he wasn’t selected to play for the team. According to Knight, he didn’t make it because of poor defense.
  9. During his 16-year NBA career, he was regarded as one of the most controversial, outspoken, and dominating players in the history of basketball.
  10. As a player, he was a perennial All-Star who earned league MVP honors in 1993.
  11. In recognition of Barkley’s collegiate and NBA achievements, his number 34 jersey was officially retired by Auburn University on March 3, 2001. In the same month, the Philadelphia 76ers also officially retired his jersey. On March 20, 2004, the Phoenix Suns also honored Barkley by retiring his jersey including him in the “Suns Ring of Honor”.
  12. In 2006, he was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
