Since 1961, he has performed in stage, film, and television, and is most known for his roles as Dr. Emmett “Doc” Brown in the Back to the Future trilogy (1985–1990) and Jim Ignatowski in the comedy series Taxi (1978–1983), for which he won two Emmy Awards.

Lloyd was born on October 22, 1938, in Stamford, Connecticut, to Ruth Lloyd (née Lapham; 1896–1984) and her lawyer husband Samuel R. Lloyd Jr., a singer and sister of San Francisco mayor Roger Lapham.

Lloyd got his start working as an apprentice at summer theatres in Mount Kisco, New York, and Hyannis, Massachusetts. At the age of 19, he began taking acting lessons in New York City, some with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre, and he remembered his New York theatre debut in a 1961 production of Fernando Arrabal’s play And They Put Handcuffs on the Flowers, adding, “I was a substitute and it was my first sort of role in New York.”

His Broadway debut was in the short-lived Red, White, and Maddox (1969), and he went on to Off-Broadway appearances in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Kaspar (February 1973), The Harlot and the Hunted, The Seagull (January 1974), and Total Eclipse (January 1975).

Lloyd made his Broadway comeback with the musical Happy End. He appeared at Yale Repertory Theatre in Andrzej Wajda’s adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Possessed and at the P.A.F. Playhouse in Huntington Station, New York, in Jay Broad’s premiere of White Pelican.

In 1977, he said of his Meisner-trained training at the Neighborhood Playhouse, “My work had been inconsistent up to that point. I’d be great one night and then dreadful the next. Meisner taught me how to consistently use the best of what I have to say. But, I suppose, no one can teach you the knack, or whatever it is, that allows you to come alive on stage.”

Lloyd and Michael J. Fox starred in a Back to the Future skit on Jimmy Kimmel Live on October 21, 2015, to celebrate the date in the second installment of the film trilogy. Lloyd made a guest appearance in the Roseanne episode “No Country For Old Women” in May 2018, in which he played Lou, the mother of Roseanne and Jackie’s mother.
