Doc Rivers is an American basketball coach and a retired basketball player who serves as the head coach for the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association. Before he fully transitioned into becoming a well-respected head coach in NBA, he was a former professional basketball player who played as a point guard from 1983 to 1996.   1. His coaching career began in 1999 with the Orlando Magic during which he served as the head coach of the team for more than 4 NBA seasons. Following his first year with the Magic, he earned his first Coach of the Year award in 2000. For his next 3 years with the Magic, he made it to the post-season before he was fired in 2003 following a 1-10 start of the season.
  2. Before landing a professional career as a basketball coach, he was a former basketball player who used to represent the United States with the national team during the 1982 FIBA World Championship where he led the team to the silver medal.
  3. In the 1983 NBA draft, Rivers had been drafted as the 31s overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks. After he was drafted, he then spent the next 7 seasons as a starter who was assisting star player Dominique Wilkins at that time.
  4. Before he ended his basketball career, he spent another year as a starter for the Los Angeles Clippers, played for the New York Knicks as well as for the San Antonio Spurs from 1994 to 1996.
  5. In 2004, he was hired by the Boston Celtics as their head coach. He earned the honor to coach the East for the 2008 NBA All-Star Game in New Orleans after impressively showing his coaching strengths in the Celtics’ winning game against the New York Knicks on January 21, 2008, with a 109-93 victory.
  6. On May 13, 2011, it was reported that he and Celtics approved a 5-year contract extension worth $35 million. He obtained his 400th win for the team in a 99-95 victory against Toronto Raptors on February 6, 2013.
  7. On June 25, 2013, Rivers was acquired by the Los Angeles Clippers for an unprotected 2015 NBA first-round draft pick.
  8. He obtained his 900th win as a head coach on November 8, 2019, following the Clippers’ victory in a game against the Portland Trail Blazers.
  9. Rivers was the first NBA coach to personally coach his own son Austin Rivers who was under his coaching supervision from January 16, 2015, until June 26, 2018, during which he was traded to the Washington Wizards.
