Elena Dementieva is a former Russian professional tennis player who is known for her overall contributions in tennis and to the sports industry as a whole.   1. She was rejected by the Dynamo Sports Club and Central Red Army Tennis Club at the age of 7 before she enrolled at Spartak Tennis Club where she was coached by Rauza Islanova, who turned out to be the mother of professional tennis players and .

  3. Dementieva won her first international tournament “Les Petits As” in France at the age of 13.
  4. In 1997, Dementieva entered the WTA’s top 500 and turned professional in 1998. Not too long after turning into a professional tennis player, she then made it to the top 100 in 1999. At the time of her debut, she represented Russia in the Fed Cup final in a match against the United States.
  5. In 2000, Dementieva made it to the top 20 after winning more than 40 singles matches for the 2nd straight year and earned more than $600,000. At that time, she also became the first Russian woman to reach the US Open semifinals in singles but lost to Lindsay Davenport. In that same year, Dementieva was named the WTA Tour’s “Most Improved Player”.
  6. After the first semifinal of the year 2007 at the Tier I Toray Pan Pacific Open held in Tokyo, Japan, she suffered a rib fracture in Antwerp and was off the tour for 9 weeks, which eventually dropped Dementieva out of the top 10. By the end of the summer that same year, her ranking dropped to the world’s no. 20.
  7. In her entire playing career as a professional, she has competed in matches against some of the world’s best tennis players including , , Mary Pierce, Vera Zvonareva, Katarina Srebotnik, Justine Henin, and many others.
  8. On October 9, 2010, just before she announced her retirement, it was revealed that Dementieva had qualified for the year-ending Tour Championships for the 10th time in her playing career. Her final event was the WTA Tour Championships during which she qualified for the 3rd consecutive year as the no. 7 seed.
