Enrique Hernández Facts

  1. He was in love with baseball from childhood and inspired by his father, he began playing the sport at the age of 6. Soon, he participated in international youth tournaments in Venezuela and the Dominican Republic.
  2. He was just 5’6″ in his high school junior year but reportedly grew by 5 inches by the time he completed his senior year.
  3. Enrique was drafted by the MLB team Houston Astros in the 6th round of the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft and eventually got a call up to the majors for the first time in 2014. He was only the 2nd player after Geovany Soto to be drafted by the MLB straight out of the American Military Academy.
  4. His nickname, Kike (pronounced as Kee-Kay) has often been spelled as Kiké during TV broadcasts to avoid confusion with the word Kike which is a derogatory ethnic slur for a Jew, but with a different pronunciation.
  5. He made his major league debut on July 1, 2014, and scored his first major league home run the very next day, against the Seattle Mariners. He was traded, later that month, to the Miami Marlins and his first major league career grand slam came (a home run hit with all 3 bases occupied by baserunners, resulting in the maximum possible tally of 4 runs from a single hit) for them, on September 26, 2014, that too in the 9th inning.
  6. By the end of 2014, he had moved to the Los Angeles Dodgers and in 2015 he topped the league’s batting averages list against left-handers, scoring at 0.423.
  7. In the 5th game of the 2017 National League Championship Series, he scored a grand slam and hit 2 other home runs. His total of 7 runs equaled the record for most RBIs (Runs Batted In) in a postseason game and his performance helped take the Dodgers to the World Series (annual national championship match) for the first time since 1988.
  8. On July 25, 2018, he pitched for the first time in his career and during the match, became the first position player since Babe Ruth to play in the infield, the outfield, and give up 3+ runs in the same game. He also became the first-ever position player to give up a walk-off home run.
  9. On April 19, 2019, he became the first player ever to hit a home run off famed pitcher Josh Hader with the count at 0-2. Before this game, Josh had gone up 0-2 against batters on 82 occasions and had always held them to a .049 batting average.
  10. On August 22, 2019, Enrique scored his first walk-off hit in the Dodgers‘ win against the Toronto Blue Jays.
  11. In October 2018, he was selected in the MLB All-Stars team for the 2018 MLB Japan All-Star Series, an annual best-of-6-games series between the MLB All-Stars team and the Japanese national team.
