Gary Paffett is a British professional racing driver who had an illustrious career in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) championship where he competed from 2003 to 2018 (except 2006) and won the title in 2005 and 2018. He also stood 2nd in the championship in 2004, 2009, 2010, and 2012. After it was announced that Mercedes, with whom Gary had spent his entire DTM career, would no longer be participating in the competition, he decided to join the Formula E series for the 2018-19 season. For the 2019-20 Formula E season, he moved into a management role with the Mercedes-Benz EQ Formula E Team, while also serving as their test and reserve driver. Gary had also participated in the premier Formula One tier as a test driver from 2003 to 2017 (except 2014 and 2015), a stint that ran almost in parallel with his DTM career.

Gary Paffett Facts

1. In 1995, at the age of 14, Gary won the British Junior TKM Championship and finished as runner-up in the Junior ICA European Championship. The next year, he won the ‘McLaren Mercedes Karting Champion of the Future’ award and finished 2nd in the British Junior ICA Championship.
2. He continued to taste consistent success in British events for the next 3 years, winning the 1997 Formula Vauxhall Junior Winter Series, and the 1998 Formula Vauxhall Junior Class B championship. He then got promoted to the 1998-99 Formula Vauxhall Junior series and won the title which helped him win the prestigious ‘McLaren Autosport BRDC Young Driver of the Year’ award in 1999.
3. His strong performances helped him graduate to the scholarship class of the British Formula 3 championship, which he won in 2000. The next year, he moved to Germany to compete in the German Formula 3 championship and after finishing 6th in 2001, he clinched the title in 2002.
4. In 2003, he was signed up to race for the new Brand Motorsport team in the Formula 3000 International Championship but the team withdrew from the tournament at the eleventh hour. Consequently, Gary had to join DTM with the Mercedes team which kick-started his illustrious career in the tournament.
