Jüri Vips Facts

1. He had started participating in competitive motorsports in 2011, at the age of about 10. Like most professional drivers, he had started with karting. He first won the Rotax Junior Estonian Championship in 2013 through which he qualified for the 2014 Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals (Junior category) where too he had managed to clinch the title.
2. Jüri had graduated to single-seater racing by 2016 by participating in the year’s Italian F4 Championship as well as the ADAC Formula 4 Championship. He had finished 5th in the former event and had clinched the ‘Rookie Championship’ after winning the last race of the season. He won the latter tournament in 2017, clinching the title in the very last race of the season.
3. Jüri had made his debut in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship in October 2017. He had competed in the last 3 races of the season, as a guest driver, after the team’s regular driver, Petru Florescu, was unavailable due to medical reasons. Jüri managed to secure a full-time seat in the tournament in 2018 and had impressed in his rookie season by winning 4 races, finishing 4th overall in the championship. He repeated his 4th place finish the following year, despite winning 1 less race, this time at the FIA Formula 3 Championship.
4. At the 2019 Macau Grand Prix, where he had eventually finished in 2nd place (just 0.792 seconds behind the eventual winner), he had taken the pole position after the qualification race. He had also set a new record for the track’s ‘fastest lap’ during the race.
5. In January 2020, it was announced that he had been given a seat at the Super Formula Championship (premier Japanese open-wheel motor racing event). The start of the tournament, though, was pushed back to August 2020 in the aftermath of the global outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Jüri’s participation in the event remained shrouded in serious doubt though as Japan, like most countries, had closed its borders to foreign nationals to fight the coronavirus outbreak.
6. He was eventually unable to participate in the early part of the tournament due to the aforementioned reasons. However, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for him as he was called up to replace an injured driver at the FIA Formula 2 Championship, the 2nd tier of formula racing in the FIA Global Pathway.
