His parents, Frank Chin and Yen Yen Chin, were both from China, but they escaped from mainland China to Taiwan during the Chinese Communist Revolution. They then relocated to Minnesota, where Jimmy was born and raised. Jimmy has always been a sport from a young age as he participated in martial arts and competitive swimming.

Jimmy Chin worked together with his wife to direct and produce the feature-length documentary Meru, depicting his 2011 climb. The documentary premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film festival and won the US audience Documentary award.  Together with his wife again, they collaborated to direct and produce the documentary Free Solo, which again won the People’s Choice Award: Documentaries at the 2018 Toronto International film festival, the 2018 BAFTA Award for Best documentary, and the 2018 Academy for the best documentary feature.
