Gebbia said they should rent out airbeds in their apartment to conference-goers because the Industrial Design Society of America conference was heading to San Francisco and several hotels were reserved.

After struggling to secure funds for the new venture, the team produced cereal boxes focused on 2008 presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain, called “Obama O’s” and “Cap’n McCains,” and sold them at the conventions. As Gebbia presented their work to Paul Graham, the creator of Y Combinator, he was inspired with the tenacity with which they pursued their goal, and they were accepted into the program as a result. He provided them with their first round of seed financing in just two days.
