Marcus Ericsson Facts
- He is an ardent ice hockey fan and used to love watching and cheering for the Swedish national team as a child. He had even played as a goalkeeper in local youth teams before he had decided to embark on a career in racing.
- When he won the 2007 Formula BMW UK championship, on debut, he was just 16 years old. Although not many were expecting him to finish any higher than 8th, he ended up winning the title by 40 points. He was also the last winner of the competition as the series was merged with the German series to make a new European championship the following year.
- His best result in 5 competitive seasons (2014-2018) in the Formula World One Championship was the 8th place finish that he managed at the 2015 Australian Grand Prix. It was also the first time that a Swedish driver had recorded F1 points after Stefan Johansson’s 3rd-place finish at the 1989 Portuguese Grand Prix.
- At the 2018 Italian Grand Prix, he was involved in a high speed-accident during the 2nd practice event after a technical issue with his car caused a loss of control and he slammed it into a wall. The car flipped over thrice but fortunately, despite the severity of the accident, he managed to escape unhurt.
- During his debut year in the IndyCar Series, 2019, he had to miss out on the Grand Prix of Portland as he was a standby for an injured at the year’s Belgian Grand Prix.
