It was during this time that he was involved in Operation Red Wings. It was during this operation that a four-man Special Reconnaissance element was ambushed and three of them killed but Marcus survived. The other members of the SEAL Team 10 tried to rescue them but they were all killed.
Marcus who sustained several fractures and a broken back was rescued by the villagers and after recovering he went back to work. In 2006, he was deployed to Iraq during Operation Iraq Freedom. During the operation he fractured his spine and had his knees blown out and this led to his discharge from duty. He returned home in 2007 and he co-authored the book Lone Survivor: The Eyewitness Account of Operation Redwing and the lost Heroes of SEAL Team 10.
