Mario Andretti is an American former professional racing driver who is widely regarded as one of the greatest drivers of all time. He won the Indianapolis 500 event in 1969, the Formula One World Championship in 1978, and the PPG Indy Car World Series in 1984. He had also won the USAC Championship Car series in 1965, 1966, and 1969, and was a runner-up in 1967 and 1968. Mario is the first person to be named ‘United States Driver of the Year’ in 3 different decades (1967, 1978, and 1984), to have won IndyCar races in 4 different decades, and to have won automobile races of any kind in 5 different decades.

Mario Andretti Facts

1. He was born in Motovun, Croatia, which was then a part of Italy. His family left the place in 1948 and lived in a refugee camp in Lucca, Tuscany after World War II. They eventually moved to the United States in 1955, settled in Nazareth, Pennsylvania, and he became a naturalized citizen in April 1965.
2. He was fascinated with fighter jets as a child and had wished to become a fighter pilot before getting involved with motorsports. He has even flown in an F-15, an F-16, and an F-111.
3. As of June 2020, he remained the only driver in history to have won the Indianapolis 500 event (1969), the Daytona 500 event (1967), and the Formula One World Championship (1978).
4. His first job was working at a gas station in Nazareth, Pennsylvania with his twin brother Aldo. He was 15 years old at that time.
5. In 1992, he was chosen to induct his childhood hero Alberto Ascari, posthumously, into the ‘International Motorsports Hall of Fame’.
6. As of June 2020, he was one of only 2 drivers, along with Dan Gurney, to have won races in Formula One, IndyCar, World Sportscar Championship, and NASCAR championships.
