Halperin started out as a desk assistant in 1988 for ABC News and was also a researcher for World News Tonight. He was in their investigative unit as a general assignment reporter. In 1992, he was working full-time as an on-air producer especially during the coverage of Bill Clinton’s campaign. He later became the producer of the special event for ABC in New York and was later an editorial producer. He became the political director for ABC in 1997 and as director, he appeared as a correspondent and political analyst for ABC News television and radio programs.

Halperin released a book in October 2006 with John F. Harris called The Way to Win: Clinton, Bush, Rove and How to take the White House in 2008. In March of 2007, he was replaced as political director by David Chalian and became a political analyst for ABC News. In May of the same year, he was hired as a political analyst and editor at large for Time Magazine. He was hired as a senior political analyst at MSNBC in June 2010. In 2011, Time released an app called Mark Halperin 2012 which contained his take on the news.
