Martin Guptill Facts
- At the age of 13, he met with a serious accident as a forklift fell on his left foot and 3 of his toes had to be amputated. His nickname, Two Toes, is a result of this incident.
- His first-class debut was in March 2006 which was a tale of 2 contrasting halves. He scored a 4-ball duck in the 1st innings and made 99 in the 2nd.
- He scored a century on his ODI debut for New Zealand in January 2009, becoming the first New Zealander to do so. His score of 122 not out was also the highest score by a New Zealand batsman on ODI debut and at that time, the 2nd highest debut score ever in ODIs.
- He also holds the record of being the first New Zealand batsman to ‘carry his bat’ (an opening batsman who is unbeaten when an innings is closed) through an ODI inning.
- In 2009, he was named in the ‘World ODI XI’ by the ICC (International Cricket Council).
- For the 2011-12 season, he was honored with the ‘Sir Richard Hadlee Medal’, New Zealand’s highest annual cricketing award. New Zealand Cricket (NZC) also awarded him the ‘T20 Player of the Year’ award that season.
- In a 2013 ODI series against England, he scored 330 runs, which was a world record at that time for the most runs scored in a 3-match bilateral ODI series.
- He was the highest run-scorer of the 2015 World Cup, that New Zealand co-hosted, with 547 runs in 9 innings. He achieved the feat despite getting 3 ducks out of his 6 innings in the group stages of the tournament.
- In November 2015, during the first-ever day-night Test match, he became the first batsman to face, and also be dismissed, by a pink ball in a Test Match.
- He is the first New Zealand batsman to record 3 scores of more than 180 in ODIs.
