He was raised together with his only sister, Sonia Coelho, a writer. Coelho wrote his next book, The Alchemist, and the Brazilian publisher could only print nine hundred copies. He later found a bigger publishing house, and though his book did not get much recognition, it did after publishing his next book, Brida. Later it became a best-selling book internationally.

Coelho writes at least a book after every two years. Some of his other books include; Hippie, The Valkyries, and Aleph, which are autobiographical, The Pilgrimage included. Others like The Manual of the Warrior of Light, Maktub, among others, are fictional.

In 2016, Coelho and Kobe Bryant met and discussed writing a children’s book together. Two months after they had begun writing, Bryant died in a plane crash, and Coelho deletes the whole draft.
