Townshend was born in Chiswick, West London, on 19 May 1945. He is a son to Cliff Townshend, a professional alto saxophonist and her mother, Betty Dennis, was a singer. Both her parents were heavy drinkers and high tempers. When his father was away with his band, his mother was having affairs with other men. His parents separated when he was a toddler and went to stay with his maternal grandmother. After two years, they reunited and purchased a house together.
