Hamilton was born in Toledo, Ohio, on August 28, 1958. Dorothy (née McIntosh), a professor, and Ernest S. Hamilton, a professor of biology, adopted him at the age of six weeks and raised him in Bowling Green, Ohio. Susan (his parents’ biological daughter) is his older sister, and Steven is his younger brother (who was also adopted).

Hamilton contracted a mysterious illness when he was two years old that forced him to stop developing. The condition started to correct itself after several scans and many incorrect assessments (including a diagnosis of cystic fibrosis that gave him only six months to live).

His family physician referred him to Dr. Shwachman at Boston Children’s Hospital. Hamilton placed third in the 1980 United States Figure Skating Championships, securing him a spot on the United States Olympic team. Don Laws was his mentor at the time.
