During his time at the University of Illinois, Khan worked for the car engineering firm Flex-N-Gate Corporation. He was appointed as the company’s engineering director after graduation. He established Bumper Works in 1978, specializing in car bumpers for personalized pickup trucks and body shop repairs. A $50,000 loan from the Small Business Administration and $16,000 from his own investments were used to finance the new business.

In 1980, he purchased Flex-N-Gate from his former boss, Charles Gleason Butzow, and merged it with Bumper Works. Khan expanded the business to the point that it was supplying bumpers to the Big Three automakers. He started producing a limited number of bumpers for Toyota pickup trucks in 1984.
