He later told the world that he made the song when he was 17 years old in his basement. The song garnered around 100,000 streams on SoundCloud and after such a success, he was approached by Capitol Records in the April 2015. After he was a part of Capitol Records, he released the track as a single and this time, with an accompanying music video.

The song peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 which was an amazing achievement for a debut single from such a young artist. In June 2015, he performed at the BET Awards together with the cast of the family-friendly comedy sitcom, Black-ish.
