Kennedy began his MMA career in 1996 after being trained at Atascadero by Terry Kelly and Barry Smith. He received another training in 1999 by Chuck Liddell, Gann McGee, Jake Shields, and John Hackleman at The Pit. He won all three fights at Extreme Challenge 50 in the 2003 one-night tournament.
He joined the army on 4 January 2004 and completed all the requirements. He was assigned to the 7TH Special Forces Group after completing Ranger School serving on Operational Detachments Alpha. He served several other roles. In 2006, he fought only once. He fought in the 2007 International Fight League. Due to army deployment in 2008, he did not fight that year. He stepped down from active duty to Texas Army National Guard in the 19th Special Forces Group as a Special Forces Weapons Sergeant.
He returned back to MMA in 2009, where he took a Strikeforce Challenge and won over Nick Thompson. He made another win over Zak Cummings at ShoMMA 3. On 16 June 2010, he fought Trevor Prangley at Strikeforce: Los Angeles and defeated him. After Strikeforce organization was closed in January 2013, Kennedy was among the few fighters brought to join the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He faced Roger Gracie at UFC 162 on 6 July 2013 and won over him. He won two more fights with Lyoto Machida and Michael Bisping. His fourth fight was with Yoel Romero on 27 September 2014, although he lost the fight on the third round via TKO. He announced his retirement from MMA on 17 January 2017.
He has appeared in several films and television series, including; “Hunting Hitler,” “Deadliest Warrior,” and “Range 15.” In 2017, he produced a documentary series, “Not a War Story.” He is also the producer of the short film “Slaves.”
