1. She was the second child born to Motilal Nehru and Swaruparani.
2. Her father belonged to the Kashmiri Pandit community whereas her mother was a descendant of the Kashimi Brahmin community.
3. Her step-mother died during childbirth.
4. She was the first woman to have been given a place in the cabinet before India got its independence and served under the provincial legislature of the “United Provinces”. Besides that, Vijaya was also assigned the post of a minister for public health and a local self-made government.
5. Vijaya was elected as a member of the United Provinces‘ Constituent Assembly in 1946.
6. She served as the ambassador for India to various countries including the United States, Soviet Union, Spain, and Mexico.
7. In 1978, the Alpha Kappa Alpha induced her into the sorority as an honorary member of theirs for being the first woman President of the “United Nations General Assembly” in 1953.
8. From 1962 to 1964, Vijaya was the elected “Governor of Maharashtra.”
9. When her niece Indira declared “the Emergency” in 1975, Vijaya stood up against her and in 1977, she campaigned against her causing her to sustain an electoral defeat. She had contested against her as a member of the Janata Party.
10. After she retired, Vijaya was appointed as by the “UN Human Rights Commission” as their Indian representative.
11. In the past, she was made Executive Council at the “Aligarh Muslim University.”
