Wayne Gretzky Facts
- Canada awarded him the title of the O.C. (Officer of the Order of Canada) on June 25, 1984, for his services and contributions to sports.
- He is an owner of a casual restaurant and sports bar, also dedicated to his achievements and memorabilia titled Wayne Gretzky’s Toronto. He and his father have been known to visit on occasion. Unfortunately, it was announced that it would be closed down in 2020 and replaced by a 40-story condo with 500 residential units.
- Wayne tried to copyright his shirt number, 99, but failed. He did manage to change the address of his restaurant to 99 Blue Jays Way. NHL also retired the number from use and it became the only number to be retired league-wide.
- It was claimed that he had extraordinary stamina and that “time slowed down for him.” Wayne stated he didn’t have a God-given gift but rather a Wally-given gift. His dad, nicknamed Wally, brilliantly coached him from a young age to predict and anticipate his and his opponents’ moves.
- As of February 2020, Wayne has more assists (1,963) than any other NHL player has total points (goals plus assists).
- Wayne was inducted into the Hockey Hockey Hall of Fame in 1999. He bypassed the 3-year waiting period and the Hall announced the waiting period would not be waived for any future player ever.
