Yashasvi Jaiswal is an Indian cricketer who has represented India at the under-19 level and Mumbai at the domestic level. A child prodigy, he rose to prominence after scoring a double hundred in a List A (domestic one-day) match for Mumbai in October 2019, becoming the then youngest cricketer (17 years, 292 days) in history to do so. His stunning performance garnered him enough attention to be bought by the Rajasthan Royals franchise for INR 2.4 crore (USD 340k) for the 2020 season of the IPL (Indian Premier League). Yashasvi then top-scored with 400 runs in the 2020 ICC (International Cricket Council) Under-19 Cricket World Cup and was adjudged ‘Player of the Series’ for his consistent performances which helped India reach the final of the tournament.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Facts

  1. He was dedicated to making a career in cricket and moved to Mumbai from his hometown at the age of 10 to receive better training and practice facilities. To practice at the iconic Azad Maidan, he took up accommodation at a dairy shop in the nearby Kalbadevi neighborhood.
  2. Due to a lack of financial resources, he used to perform some low-grade chores for the dairy shop’s owner. However, he was soon ejected from the residence as he could not help out the shopkeeper enough due to the long hours he would spend at cricket practice.
  3. Homeless, he began living in a tent with one of the groundsmen at the Azad Maidan. He would often sell panipuri (street food) after his daily training to make ends meet.
  4. His talent was eventually recognized in December 2013 by a cricket coach named Jwala Singh, who decided to become Yashasvi’s legal guardian and train him at his private academy in Santacruz, Mumbai.
  5. In a 2015 Giles Shield (school cricket tournament) match, he scored 319 runs and captured 13 wickets in a stunning all-round effort that was recognized by the Limca Book of Records.
  6. He was the leading run-getter (318 runs) and was subsequently adjudged as the ‘Player of the Tournament’ in India’s victorious campaign at the 2018 ACC (Asian Cricket Council) Under-19 Asia Cup.
  7. At the 2019–20 Vijay Hazare Trophy (domestic one-day tournament), his maiden appearance in the tournament, he was among the top 5 run-getters, with 564 runs in just 6 games at an average of 112.80.
  8. At the 2020 ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup, Yashasvi was the top-scorer for India in each of the 6 games, including the quarterfinal, the semifinal, and the final. He crossed the 50-run mark in 5 of those games and scored a hundred in a ‘Player of the Match’ performance in the semi-final against arch-rivals Pakistan.
