He won a gold medal again and went ahead to compete in the U.S. Championships of 2008. He sprained his ankle in the 2009-2010 season thus did not attend the training for that season. At the end of the season, he attained position six. In the season that followed, 2010-11, he managed to reach position five and then 4th position in the 2011-12 season in four continents. He was position 13 worldwide.

In September 2012, Rippon decided to change his coach. Rafael Arutyunyan. He had planned to participate in the 2013 four continents championships but had to withdraw as he had an ankle injury. He competed in 2013 Skate America and finished fourth. In October 2014, he competed in the 2014 CS Finlandia Trophy and finished 1st in the free program, then 2nd overall. His next win was in 2016, where he won gold at the 2016 U.S. Championships. After the 2017-18 season, he announced his retirement on 19 November 2018.
