- She has often revealed in her interviews that she took an interest in music because of her mother who wanted Alison to get involved in arts, music, and sports.
- At the age of 5, she started her classical violin training. However, she later switched to bluegrass.
- She started competing in local talent contests by the age of 8 and used to excel in most of the talent events.
- By the age of 10, she had formed her own music band.
- She managed to win the Walnut Valley Festival Fiddle Championship at the age of 13. She was declared the Most Promising Fiddler in the Midwest by the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass in America.
- In 1985, she signed a recording contract with Rounder Records. As per the clause of the contract, she was required to alternate between a solo album and album with Union Station.
