- His grandparents emigrated from Jamaica to Cuba to get a better education.
- At the age of 15, a friend invited him to join a local baseball team during which he started playing as a first baseman until the coach noticed that he could throw well-enough to qualify as a pitcher. He started playing as a pitcher in 2003.
- In 2006, he joined the Holguín Sabuesos of the Cuban National Series League.
- In his career innings, he has compiled a tally of 24-19 win-loss records, a 3.74 earned run average (ERA), and 365 strikeouts. Despite completing 11 relief appearances in the 2007 season, Chapman was only used mainly as a starting pitcher.
- He was part of the Cuban national team at the 2007 Pan American Games and the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
