Bethany Hamilton Facts

1. She started her surfing career at the age of 7. By the age of 8, she won her first competition, Rell Sunn Menehune.
2. At the age of 13, she was attacked by a shark while she was surfing along Tunnels Beach, Kauai with her close friend, , Alana’s father, Holt, and brother Byron. She had left her left arm dangling from the board, which was attacked by a tiger shark. By the time, she reached the hospital with Alana’s family’s assistance, she had lost 60 percent of her blood. She had to spend 3 weeks in the hospital before she was released.
3. On her return to surfing after the attack, she started using a custom-made paddleboard that was thicker and slightly longer than the usual board. She also started kicking more to make up for the loss of her left arm.
4. The bathing suit she was wearing at the time of the attack and her shark-bitten surfboard have been put on display at the California Surf Museum in Oceanside, California.
5. After training for a significant period of time, she participated in her first competition in January 2004.
6. In 2004, she was honored at the ESPY Award with “Best Comeback Athlete” award. She was also given the Courage Teen Choice Award.
