Hemmer was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on November 14, 1964, to William (Bill), a former mattress manufacturing executive, and Georganne, a homemaker. He is the second son and middle child of the Hemmers’ five daughters.

In the mid-1980s, he began working in sports production at WLWT-TV, where he discovered his love for live broadcasting. Hemmer was hired as a sports editor at WLWT-TV after his senior year at Miami University. Soon after, he became a sports reporter for CBS affiliate WCPO-TV. Hemmer left WCPO-TV at the age of 26 to backpack around the world for almost a year.

Hemmer worked at CNN from 1995 to 2005, hosting shows such as American Morning (originally with Paula Zahn, then with Soledad O’Brien), CNN Tonight, CNN Early Edition, CNN Morning News, and CNN Live Today with Daryn Kagan. Hemmer was a key part of the network’s coverage of Timothy McVeigh’s execution in Terre Haute, Indiana, in May 2001.

McVeigh was sentenced to death for his role in the Oklahoma City bombing. He reported for a month from the World Trade Centre site in New York City in the wake of the September 11, 2001 attacks, and from Khandahar, Afghanistan during the early stages of the War on Terror.

Hemmer covered a mining disaster in Somerset, Pennsylvania, in the summer of 2002, in which nine employees were stranded for 77 hours when a wall dividing their tunnel from an abandoned, underwater mine gave way, dumping millions of gallons of water into their work place.

Hemmer went to Kuwait in 2003 to report on escalating tensions in Iraq, and when the war broke out, he stayed on-site to cover Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has spent over a month covering the Kosovo crisis, reporting from Aviano Air Base in Italy on aerial bombing flights, the refugee crisis from Skopje, Macedonia, and the new NATO developments from Brussels.
