Cary was born Ivan Simon Cary Elwes on 26^th October 1962 in Westminster, London. His father Dominic Elwes was a portrait painter while his mother Tessa Kennedy is a British interior designer. He was born as the youngest in his mother’s marriage to Dominic. He was born and raised with his brothers Cassian Elwes and Damian Elwes. He also has two more siblings, his half-brother Dilion and his half-sister Milica form his mother’s second marriage.

Cary’s parents divorced in 1969 leaving them under the care of his mother who remarried in 1971. His biological father died in 1975 by committing suicide through over dossing.
